1971 – 2021 Wild Horse and Burro Counts

In the first 10 years stockmen removed over 17,000 head of claimed horses and burros from the range while the Wild Horse and Burro Program’s horse and burro populations doubled.

By 2020 there was over 144,00 head in the Wild Horse and Burro Program with almost 50,000 in feedlots or on rented pasture.  Over 5 times as many as there was in 1971!

Congress passed Public Law 92-195 “To require the protection, management, and control of wild free-roaming horses and burros on public lands.”  Public Law 92-195 has failed to manage, and control wild free-roaming horses and burros on public lands!

I have been documenting the counts for over 30 years.

Since 1971 wild-free-roaming horses have been protected from management and control.  They have often been allowed to damage ranges, suffer from lack of food and water while stressing the entire ecosystem they are running on.

It is time for Congress to recognize that after failing for fifty years the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971 needs Changed!  Wild horses and burros need managed, not protected.

The arid lands of the West are not a horses natural habitat, grasslands are!  The Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Program needs moved from the public lands to rented pastures in the Flint Hills of Kansas and Oklahoma.
