Helicopter gathers are the most important tool available for managing wild horses in the Great Basin.  They are needed to remove excess horses, administer PZP (birth control) to mares, manage the horses to keep genetic diversity and keep the horses from becoming inbred.  PZP may be applied through shooting mares with a dart but is difficult to do in the Great Basin.[1]  Even if PZP could be successfully applied and the horse population controlled, gathers would still be needed to manage genetic diversity, which would become even more important with fewer colts born each year.

More information on gathers, both past and future will be posted here, as well as information on gathers.
